What We’re Loving: January

What We're Loving - Jan 2019

Your library card can get you more than just books! We have a huge digital collection – including TV streaming services, eAudiobooks, newspaper subscriptions, digital yearbooks, and more – that you can access for FREE. If you’ve got questions about everything your library card can do, our staff can help! Here are a few of the things in the digital collection that we’ve been loving in the month of January.

“I’ve been watching Agatha Raisin on AcornTV! I really enjoy mystery shows, but a lot of them get a bit bogged down with little details or get really dark really quickly. Not this one! It’s light and funny while still being interesting enough to hold my attention. There are only two seasons so far, so it’s not a huge undertaking to watch from start to finish.” – Hayleigh, DMPL Digital Media Specialist

MORE INFO: Cardholders who live in Des Moines or rural Polk County can stream Acorn TV (think of it as a British Netflix) for free by signing up HERE.

“I love using RB Digital for food magazines. I enjoy cooking, so it’s nice to use the digital copy on my tablet while I’m in the kitchen. I can zoom in on recipes and save old issues without taking up space. I love that it will automatically download my favorites, so I’m never without something to read.” – Gen, DMPL Librarian

“I love listening to audiobooks on the Libby app while I commute or do chores around the house. The one I've been listening to lately is an An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green. It's so hard to put down that I find myself coming up with more chores to do so I can keep listening.” – Carrie, DMPL Information Services & Collection Development Librarian

The Brokenwood Mysteries on AcornTV is one of my new favorite shows! This series is produced in New Zealand with just the right mix of mystery, evolving characters and humor. If you watch very carefully, you can keep up with the detectives, and that is a huge plus for me! I gave my phone a New Zealand accent in honor of this show. “Call mom, cell” now comes back as “Calling mum, mo-bile”.” – Linda, DMPL Deputy Director

"Queen's 1981 Montreal concert on Qello. Bohemiam Rhapsody just got nominated for five Oscars, which reminded me of this performance by the band, considered one of the greatest live rock shows of all time and featuring frontman Freddie Mercury at his absolute prime as a performer." – Tim, DMPL Community Engagement Supervisor

“The library’s free New York Times subscription means I never get stuck behind a paywall! I like the What To Cook section when I’m feeling uninspired in the kitchen and their book review e-newsletter for figuring out what to add to my to-be-read list.” - Hayleigh, DMPL Digital Media Specialist

MORE INFO: All cardholders can sign up for a New York Times online subscription for free HERE.
